Extra, Extra: Rob Ford on Transit and Unemployment, West Nile Mosquitoes, and Bike-Lane Flexi-Posts

Every weekday’s end, we collect just about everything you ought to care about or ought not to miss.

  • Are you unemployed? Do you use public transit? If you answered “yes” to both those questions, then one of your answers was incorrect. In a press conference today during which he discussed respect for taxpayers, Mayor Rob Ford made it clear that jobs and the economy are the “number one issue,” while transit is not—because, you see, “if you haven’t got a job, you won’t need transit.”
  • It might be time to pull out the pullovers, leg-concealing trousers, and tall socks, and to start looking suspiciously at every area with standing water: for the first time this year, Toronto mosquitoes have tested positive for West Nile Virus.
  • After an outcry from cyclists and people who think things city council has voted in favour of should then be implemented as planned, the City will be installing flexi-posts in the new Adelaide bike lane. Some will be appearing this week, and it’s expected that the lane will be fully separated as of September.
