Extra, Extra: Sloth Makes World Cup Pick, LRT Videos, and Tweets Under Construction

Every weekday’s end, we collect just about everything you ought to care about or ought not to miss.

  • Who hasn’t heard the saying “Don’t place your wager until the sloth has made his upside-down pick?” It is well known in sports circles that one should never make a bet on the outcome of a World Cup final game without first finding out what an upside-down sloth thinks about the whole thing.

  • A soothing voice, reassuringly muted yet cheerful colours, and non-threatening cartoon vehicles are just some of the tools Metrolinx uses to educate the LRT-illiterate and woo the LRT-averse in a new video straightforwardly titled “LRT What When and Why.”
  • Headaches. Delays. A whole lot of frustration. And the waiting. The endless waiting. These are all things associated with construction season in Toronto, and with construction-tweet season in the Twitter feed of comedian Pat Thornton. He is well-meaning and would very much like to be able to compose a tweet about construction, but headaches, delays, and frustration are inevitable, and we’ll just have to be patient. There’s sure to be one by fall.

Am I the only one that finds the sloth really cute?

Where was that video, say, back in 2010?

Most of the info about light rail can be seen here ( for all Torontonians to look at.

Here’s the bottom line info for Torontonians: seven years of trying to sell Toronto a huge LRT plan has been a massive, embarrassing failure. We might build a limited network, but that’s about it.

Crosstown Eglinton is a good beginning. It’s just RoFo that’s held up the rest. But chin up, he’s done.

For four of those years we’ve had an ignorant, drug addicted Circus Clown trying to run city hall. There’s been a good deal of gridlock on many issues because of this city’s idiotic decision to put an angry man-child in charge. That will change this fall.

        • Don River

That’s true up to a point regarding Ford, but the sell-job started failing before he got elected. Giambrone’s arrogance turned off a lot of people even before he disgraced himself, and Miller functionally ran away from defending his plan. And if nothing else, Ford’s mantra of “subways subways subways” was successful in that no future transit plan will ever be able to ignore an expansion of our traditional subway network.

But most egregious for me was their unwillingness to even consider amending Transit City in 2009-10 to account for the much-needed DRL. With an $8 billion transit gift from the province sitting in their laps (which will probably never happen again), they refused to address the city’s #1 transit priority.

Today, we’ve had four years of Ford’s lack of interest in the DRL, and the Liberals are saying they will spend the bulk of the GTA’s transit allotment on GO electrification, leaving not nearly enough for the DRL. Which means we probably won’t see the DRL under construction for at least a decade, or possibly ever.

Ford not doing the right thing is easily explained by him being an idiot. Miller and Giambrone didn’t have that excuse.

Things should change this fall. It remains to be seen if it will be for the better.

And you’re fit to be tied?

          • Don River

Nah, I keep the ropes fairly loose for easy escapes.
