Scene: The Polar Bear Cub Gets His Name Day

The polar bear cub learns his name is Humphrey, is still cute anyway.

WHERE: Toronto Zoo

WHEN: Thursday, March 6, 12 p.m.

WHAT: “Humphrey” might conjure thoughts of hard-boiled actors and failed presidential candidates, but in a contest with 14,000 votes, it’s what the public named Toronto’s polar bear cub. Despite being only four months old, Humphrey is already too strong to have direct contact with handlers, so they play and train through fences and other safety measures. While he’s strong, he’s still getting used to his surroundings; when he plays outside and a truck rumbles by on the service road by his fence, he runs inside and hides in his bed. Click through the image gallery for a look at Humphrey’s cuteness, and at the video below to see the Toronto Zoo video of his name unveiling.

That is going to be a BIG Humphrey.

I will be much happier when I read the headline: “Scene: The Polar Bear Cub Gets His FREEDOM Day”

So he can slowly starve to death on a diet of scrounged garbage from behind Scarborough fast food chains? You’re quite sadistic.

Maybe he’d make it up to Whittamore’s for some strawberries or pumpkins? He could be a feature in a corn maze.

        Oh…..wait….that’s not the idea here.

He could follow the power line corridor to Pickering and feast on radioactive gulls?

        Hmm…maybe not.

I know, he could travel the open plains of the local golf courses…….

        Darn.

That whole civilization thing is getting in the way of letting poor Humphrey go.

Darn reality getting in the way of idealism……….again.

If you are advocating release, please remember he was born in the zoo and would be unlikely to survive if dropped anywhere to fend for himself.

Like all zoo animals, we are stuck with them as educational instruments.

The choice is not, as you seem to believe, between release or incarceration.

The choice is kill them all or work with what we have.

If you want to shut down the zoo, better bring a lot of drugs and rent a big truck to take all those bodies to an incinerator.

There won’t be no freedom for them, as you envision, ever.
