Extra, Extra: Late-Night Mayor, Hollywood Talks Rob Ford, and Pan Am Priciness

Every weekday’s end, we collect just about everything you ought to care about or ought not to miss.

  • You probably already know that Mayor Rob Ford is going to be appearing on Jimmy Kimmel tonight. You probably already know this because Rob Ford took a trip to Los Angeles, Rob Ford was picked up from the airport in Los Angeles by Jimmy Kimmel in a cap, Rob Ford was going to go to the Oscars, and then Rob Ford didn’t end up going to the Oscars–and all of that got almost as much coverage as the Oscars themselves.
  • Rob Ford has given Canadian reporters a whole new Canadian thing to ask Americans about—and they seem to know a whole lot more about our mayor than they do about, say, what a prime minister is or where our capital city can be found. “I get my Canadian cities mixed up, but isn’t he the one that got caught smoking crack?” asked Daniel Scott, of California. He’s just one of the ten people the Star chatted with on the streets of Hollywood about our mayor.
  • The cost of security for Toronto’s 2015 Pan Am Games has now risen to $239 million, or well over half of what it would cost to tear down the Gardiner east of Jarvis. If only the Gardiner could be torn down in such a way as to simultaneously provide Pan Am security.

So who was wearing the ‘cap?’

Jut watched the show. Weak – I had hoped Jimmy would really dive in, but I guess that’s not his style. Liked the line about if Rob had more gay friends would he have worn that tie?

Rob has turned into a talking doll. Pull the string and he says:

    “maybe you’re perfect …”

“I wasn’t put on this earth to be perfect..”

“every day, hard-working family man …”

    “…the little guy…”

    “…saved a lot of money … billion dollars …”

    “kept taxes low …”

“… this great city of Toronto …”

” call me, I’ll call you back …”

    ” … losing weight …”

    “moving on…”

    “Ford Nation …”

Aside from those phrases all he did was giggle, look lost. Weird.

Oh, he also complained about the media camping out in front of his office. I’d like to help him out with that! Sign my petition to get the media to leave Rob Ford alone. Completely alone:

I thought Jimmy Kimmel was quite decent about the whole business. He seemed genuinely puzzled as to why Ford agreed to appear on his show; he didn’t pull any punches (for a late-night comedy host, that is) and, at the end, he appeared to express some sincerity about the drinking issue. Ford acted like he was in on the joke, unaware that he is the joke!
