Duly Quoted: Sarah Thomson, on Being Marginalized by the Media

Mayoral candidate finds common ground with Rob Ford on how they're being treated by the press.

“The media has tried to marginalize my candidacy, just as they have attacked the current Mayor. But the media will not decide the outcome of this election, you, along with hundreds of thousands of other real people will decide.”

-Mayoral candidate Sarah Thomson, who today exchanged the poems and horse-drawn carriages of her campaign launch for fighting words. In an email detailing the results of a Forum Research poll commissioned by her campaign, Thomson charged that the media had not been interested in covering these poll results because “the ‘Ford’ phenomenon has impacted even the way the press does their job. Instead of publishing the truth they are working to hide it.”

Here are the results of this poll, as presented in Thomson’s statement:

Forum’s poll asked, “If an election were held today, how would you vote?” With over 1000 responses, the results were as follows.

Ford 35.1
Chow 32.2
Tory 18.8
Stintz 3.2
Thomson 2.3
Soknakie
[sic] 1.7
other 6.7

Smart move, trying to bleed off some of the victim sympathy Ford has going with the idiots who support him.

    • dsmithhfx

Sarah needs to get herself chased across a parking lot by a pack of reporters a few times to build up her media victim cred, maybe send a self-incriminating video to police to kick things off.

  • bobloblawbloblawblah

How is it that the lying, crack smoking, incompetent, lazy guy who hangs out with gangsters and sketchy characters and has little ability to get along with others is the one in the lead in this poll? Why do so many people still want Krusty The Clown as our Mayor?

    • OgtheDim

Notice how we don’t get the poll methodology.

  • dsmithhfx

At last, a campaign manager worse than Doug !

  • OgtheDim

    We’re # 5!

    We’re #5!

    Well, unless you count other……..

  • SonuvaScrimbro

“But the media will not decide the outcome of this election, you, along with hundreds of thousands of other real people will decide.”

Yes, and we’ve already decided you’re a publicity-hungry flake who apparently thinks painting yourself as a victim instead of presenting us with workable ideas is the way to get elected in this town. (Though to be fair to her, it worked for the last guy…)

    • dsmithhfx

In his first (succesful) bid for mayor, Rob ran as a radical cost-cutting outlier/council gadfly — with some justification. Although as a councillor, he invariably was on the losing end of council votes, and so no costs ended up actually being cut.

So, the sore losers of the garbage strike and other malcontents swept him into office. Then the shit hit the fan, in every way imaginable (and many unimaginable).

Sure, now he can run as a victim — of his own bad character and lifestyle choices.

I don’t see how that will help with the undecideds.

Maybe Thompson can also claim to be his victim, if there’s any votes to be had in that.

      • tyrannosaurus_rek

She’s done it once before, so why not again?

        • dsmithhfx

To die-hard Fordistas, she was the persecutor in that role.

    • bobloblawbloblawblah

“(Though to be fair to her, it worked for the last guy…)”

It did. But to be fair to Mayor Crackpipe, he did run for council and establish a reputation as the guy who would cut through red tape. Ford built his reputation by answering calls and starting at the bottom rung. Thomson seems to think she should get to be in charge without ever having served in any capacity in office.

      • OgtheDim

        “starting at the bottom rung”

On council there is no bottom rung.

        • bobloblawbloblawblah

What I mean is, Ford didn’t try for the top job right away. There aren’t many rungs on that municipal ladder but establishing yourself as a councillor first seems to be the way to go — I can’t think of a Mayor in the last 100 years that didn’t serve on council first. Thomson should be running or council. Her ego won’t let her.

          • CaligulaJones

Agreed, but the lowest rung is actually school trustee.

          • bobloblawbloblawblah

Yeah, i was going to put trustee in too. There are volunteer positions too with various committees. All places to start(Chow started as a trustee, I think). Thomson has always been part of the “political establishment”. the other members of the political establishment tell her she should run for politics so she does. Fine, but you want to be Mayor, run for council. learn how things are done, build a reputation and make allies. I’m suspicious of anyone who wants to grab the top job without much experience. Running a busines and running the city are two very different things.

        • tyrannosaurus_rek

In terms of experience there is. Ford did a decade on Council before running for mayor; what’s Sarah done? Run a magazine nobody’s ever heard of.

      • SonuvaScrimbro

“Ford built his reputation by answering calls and starting at the bottom rung.”

And staying there, apparently, since he’s content to see his current job as little more than being a glorified help-desk operator. You’re right, give Ford some credit for paying his dues in comparison to Thomson — but what a wasted opportunity those 10 years on council were for him.

Imagine the reputation he would have had if he had focused on fixing the reasons the red tape was there in the first place, rather than running around and looking at potholes all day (in between meetings with his, ahem, constituents at gas station parking lots).

        • Notcleverguy

I see what you’re saying, but keep in mind, Ford has been buying votes in low-income housing his whole political career. There aren’t tons of city councilors that can self fund a campaign like Ford has done on Family money.

I remember hearing him interviewed on the radio about ten years ago where he was throwing other councilors under the bus for spending their allowable expense limit or close to it, not over the limit, but close to it. His history of misleading dummies goes way way back.

  • OpportKnocks

    Dear Sarah;

Please take a few hours and read Noam Chomsky’s “Manufacturing Consent”

    http://www.amazon.ca/Manufacturing-Consent-Political-Economy-Media/dp/0375714499

  • Notcleverguy

Did Sarah Thomson join the race so she can complain about stuff? Seems like it.

  • Dinah Might

I think that if YOUR OWN POLL gives you 2.3% support, you deserve to be marginalized. Hey, at least you’re still on the page.

    • bjhtn

Maybe she would argue that she is in the same ranks of support as Soknacki and Stintz, although the stronger counter-argument is that all three of them are, at least right now, the also-rans on the margins.

    • McKingford

Considering the margin of error is at least +/-3%, there’s a chance her support is actually ZERO.

  • SonuvaScrimbro

Again with this “real people” stuff, same as Doug Ford when he was caterwauling about real people showing up for their big campaign rally next month. As opposed to what, imaginary people?

I know it’s one of those BS phrases politicians throw around (especially south of us where pols are always appealing to “real Americans” who embody “real American values”) but for real, people…. what’s up with the “real people” stuff? Because I hear that, my first question is who doesn’t count as “real” to that person?

    • tyrannosaurus_rek

If you aren’t part of the Silent (conservative, low information) Majority, you aren’t a real person!

  • Don J

The whole pushing the “Top 5″ thing is just to try to get her into the debates.

  • dsmithhfx

    Failed.

  • vampchick21

I’d rather have someone with at least average intelligence and the ability to actually do what a mayor is supposed to do.

Ford nitpicks over nickels and dimes and doesn’t think twice about wasting millions of dollars tossing out fully approved transit plans and having bike lanes removed. He thinks removing a revenue source is saving the city money. He can’t play well or at all with others. He can barely articulate anything. He lies to a degree that makes all other politicians looks honest. He hands out goddamn fridge magnets to people in TCHC, pretends to listen and then wanders off to wherever to drink or worse.

And it’s not just stupid shit he’s done, he’s done dangerous and criminal shit. If you can’t see the goddamn difference then I can’t help you.

Rob Ford is NOT the person to run anything larger than a high school football team.

In short, a vote for Rob Ford is proof that said voter hasn’t got a clue. It’s a wasted vote because you WILL NOT get anything that is promised because the man promising DOESN’T GIVE A SHIT.

    • nevilleross

Rob Ford shouldn’t be running anything at all except on a treadmill.
