Toronto’s Ukrainian Community Holds Queen’s Park Rally

Hundreds of people gathered in downtown Toronto to mourn those killed by security forces in Kiev, and to show support for a peaceful transition in Ukraine.

Over 300 protesters gathered outside Queen’s Park on Sunday to celebrate the ousting of Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, and to mourn those killed by security forces during recent demonstrations in Kiev. Since November, Kiev has been the site of violent protests sparked by Yanukovych’s move to reject a trade deal with the European Union and establish a closer relationship with Russia.

Yanukovych reached a deal with the opposition on Friday that saw parliamentary speaker Oleksandr Turchynov become interim leader, and he has since left the city.
