Glad Hand: A Crack in the Ice

Glad Hand is Torontoist’s political cartoon, created by Brett Lamb and appearing here every Thursday.

Climate-change deniers—a group that includes our acting mayor—have claimed that our so-far harsh winter is evidence that global warming isn’t a problem. Meanwhile…

So Kelly’s birth causes glaciers to recede? Thats a pretty cool super power, good thing he’s leading our city and not causing more glaciers to recede.

  • CaligulaJones

    Weather is climate now?

    • Dinah Might

Daily Show had a whole montage of people doing the “It’s really cold today, so this totally refutes global warming” nonsense. And we’ve got our share of it up here, too. :-(

      • dsmithhfx

Mostly in the oil patch. Almighty dollar etc.

      • CaligulaJones

        So weather is climate, then?

        • dsmithhfx

Did you get science in school?

          • CaligulaJones

Indeed. Did you get math and logic?

          • dsmithhfx

            Do it over.

        • Dinah Might

          ….sorry, what’s your point? I think I misconstrued it.

          • CaligulaJones

If people who say that a polar vortex is a refutation of global warming are speaking nonsense, why give a pass to people who believe that an ice storm is proof OF global warming?

          • Dinah Might

Well you shouldn’t. As you say, weather and climate are different (though related) things. But I don’t see anybody here claiming that one datum of weather proves anything either way.

You’ll notice the cartoon itself makes no mention of the ice storm. Did you think it did? If anything, I’d guess the cartoon is meant to refute people saying that the ice storm DISproves climate change / global warming. But that’s not the same as saying the ice storm PROVES climate change, all by itself.

          • CaligulaJones

            Distinction without a difference, really.

          • dsmithhfx

The cartoon not only does not mention the ice storm, the ice storm is completely irrelevant. What it does show is that a huge swath of glacier has melted in Norm Kelly’s lifetime. Surely an indication of the man-made climate change he would deny.

          • CaligulaJones

Silly me for taking “our so-far harsh winter” to mean something about the ice storm…

If man-made climate melted those glaciers, what melted the glacier that covered Toronto with a km of ice 15,000 years ago?

    • vampchick21

Climate measures weather patterns, so yeah. You can’t have climate without weather.

      • CaligulaJones

Well, I’m traveling a bit, so here in Blighty, the “weather is climate when we want it to be” crowd is on about flooding.

Climate expert David Cameron believes that the recent floods were definitely, 100%, probably the result of global warming.

The MET, (i.e.,, Environment Canada), begs to differ:

Nicola Maxey from the Met Office
said there was a crucial distinction between weather and climate change.

“What happened at the end of December and at the beginning of January is weather,” she said.

“Climate change happens on a global scale, and weather happens at a local scale. Climate scientists have been saying that for quite a while.

“At the moment there’s no evidence to suggest that these storms are more intense because of climate change.

I doubt any qualified Canadian climatologist would have a differing opinion on the ice storm/polar vortext combo. If you have a link to one, I’d appreciate it.

        • vampchick21

          Sigh.

Climate is the measure of weather over time. You cannot have a climate if you don’t have weather.

I’m not debating anything or claiming anything. Just saying that climate is the measure of weather over time and you cannot actually have climate if you don’t have weather.

How on earth you decided that I was therefore claiming something about global warming or climate change, pro or con, I have no fucking idea.

          • CaligulaJones

Mea fucking culpa, then. Chill. Or not, depending on the weather…

          • vampchick21

Mayhap don’t read more into a basic statement than necessary?

          • CaligulaJones

What the hell fun is THAT?

          • vampchick21

Sorry. New Year’s Resolution is to take the fun out of EVERYTHING.

    • tyrannosaurus_rek

72 years of weather is climate.

      • CaligulaJones

        Compared to a century, maybe.

        Compared to a millennium, no.

Compared to a billion years of climate, as Jules Winnfield might have it “ain’t the same fuckin’ ballpark, it ain’t the same league, it ain’t even
the same fuckin’ sport. Look, 72 years don’t mean shit”.

Unfortunately, “unprecedented” has come to mean “within the lifetime of a twenty-something”.

Get out of the “its the [insert adjective] [insert time frame X] in [insert time frame Y] meme. Its like comparing a good week for the Leafs compared to the last 40 years.

Cf. http://torontoist.com/2013/02/duly-quoted-norm-kelly-on-climate-change/ — “In fact, they’re saying life is going to be a little more comfortable in this city.”

I think the term is “Acting Mayor”, as opposed to “Acting out Mayor”.

  • VictorianShuter

Nice to see Glad Hand back. I’m sure Brett was busy with other projects, but I was a bit puzzled on why he was MIA during a year where the mayor’s antics went to new extremes.

    • tyrannosaurus_rek

I was just asking about this column a week or two ago. Glad it’s back!

  • mememine

Just what gives YOU the right to tell children to believe climate change is certain when science isn’t absolutely 100% certain themselves? YOU believers “believe” more than science does? Who’s the neocon?Did you want this misery to happen?

Progressive progressives have progressed past liberalism’s Iraq War of Climate Blame exaggeration. It was a hoax committed by us.Move on.

*Occupywallstreet now does not even mention CO2 in its list of demands because of the bank-funded and corporate run carbon trading stock markets ruled by politicians.

    • dsmithhfx

      Children? What?

Try again please. In the Queen’s English. Proper grammar. Be certain to corral your thoughts into something coherent, and if necessary ask a 5 year old to proofread your post before you hit send so that you can be certain others reading it can understand just what hyperbole you’re rambling on about.
