Duly Quoted: Michael Thompson

Councillor Michael Thompson responds to the first of two Rob Ford videos released yesterday.

“I find his portrayal and his conduct as mayor of this city offensive. The element of understanding that the city of Toronto has a motto, which is ‘Diversity Our Strength.’ And to be mocking and interpreting—his interpretation of, being, I suppose, being Jamaican, is offensive…”

—Councillor Michael Thompson (Ward 37, Scarborough Centre), commenting on a video, filmed Monday and posted to YouTube yesterday, that saw Mayor Rob Ford mumbling and speaking in Jamaican patois at a Rexdale restaurant. Thompson made it he clear he feels Ford is not “fit” to remain in office, and suggested the mayor is not treating the issue with the seriousness it deserves.

Thank you. Finally someone speaks out on the offensiveness of his mocking Jamaicans.

    • vampchick21

Not only that, but a couple (that I know of) members of the Jamaican community have called out the language that he used as offensive AND called out the media for not realizing that certain words should have been bleeped.

      • HotDang

Nothing should be bleeped in a news cast.

        • vampchick21

I beg to differ. The name Rob Ford or Doug Ford should be bleeped. And their faces should be pixilated and their voices changed digitially. For my own amusement. I can play guess the moron!

        • CaligulaJones

On the radio today, AFTER the words were used, there was a discussion whether the CRTC requires only English swear words to be censored…

          • vampchick21

Won’t someone think of the children!

          • the_lemur

Since it largely went over the heads of those who aren’t familiar with patois, maybe ‘Nobady nah tink bout de pickney dem?’

      • bobloblawbloblawblah

Can’t the Fords just go the bleep away?

        • vampchick21

          That would be the ideal.

      • Jacob

I’m curious to know exactly what he said and what it means.

        • vampchick21

There’s a ‘translation’ on the National Post if you want to head over.

  • Dave

I love Ford’s excuse: “Yes I got drunk last night, but that’s personal. And so what if I was affecting a Jamaican patois and making offensive remarks? That’s just how I talk with my friends.

“Also, by ‘friends,’ I mean Sandro Lisi. I still hang out with that guy.”

    • CaligulaJones

So, I guess the “I’m Mayor 24/7″ is out of the campaign literature. Going to be down to matchbook covers soon.

      • vampchick21

Dougie will leave it in, because he clearly has no clue.

      • Dave

        Or fridge magnets.

      • tyrannosaurus_rek

Ford meant 24 hours of every 7-day period.

  • Whaaa… ?

Meh… more of the same Rob Ford bullshit and buffoon behaviour. If you know anyone who voted for Rob Ford in the last election, keep these stories bookmarked and make sure that going into the next election, those people get educated as to who/what they REALLY voted for last time.

I know I’m gonna be doing that with some people and then just tell them ‘I don’t care who you vote for… just don’t vote for either of the Ford brothers. They’re liars, bigots and aren’t even true conservatives’.

    • Jacob

Ya, not that easy. I had someone get up and yell at me last week simply because I don’t like Ford.

Facts don’t work, logic doesn’t work, nothing works.

The Ford cult of personality is unshakable as North Korea’s Kim dynasty’s.

      • bobloblawbloblawblah

True. The Ford fans view any negative reporting on Ford(justified or not) as an attack. This only makes them want to vote for Ford more in order to pi$$ off the “elites” who criticize him. Ford Nation has an emotional bond with this guy. Logic and facts won’t work on his hardcore base. However, there is enough of the soft Ford vote from 2010 that are looking for a new horse to back to ensure a Ford defeat.

      • Whaaa… ?

I agree. But then if I hear anyone complain about politicians, I just throw it back in their faces… ‘you voted for an idiot, so don’t be surprised that we have politicians in office who are idiots’.

  • CaligulaJones

Certainly the first example I thought of, too. That, and during a non-cable broadcast of “The Bourne Identity”, someone saying “scheisse”…while English swear words were edited.

There was a great bit on “Speaker’s Corner” years ago (that’s what YouTube used to be called), about how naughty it was to say the French word for “seal”.
