A meeting of two men who have, in their own ways, raised Toronto's international profile.
Earlier today, Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment held a press conference to make a pair of announcements. One of them was that the NBA’s 2016 all-star game will take place in Toronto, and the other was that the Raptors are hiring hip-hop star and Toronto native Drake as their “global ambassador.” It’s not clear what the job entails, but we know that Drake will be helping the struggling team rebrand itself, and that the rebranding effort will include new team colours for the 2015-2016 season.
The announcement is also notable for being the first time Drake and Mayor Rob Ford, who was also on hand at the press conference, have been photographed together (that we know of)—although Drake’s label had previously announced a business alliance with City Hall.
Both men have been responsible for raising Toronto’s international profile, albeit in completely different ways. (Toronto may be the only city on earth where the breakout rap star has a cleaner image than the mayor.)
Here’s a Twitter-based recap of the event.
