Duly Quoted: Sandra Farina

“There’s nothing happening with the BIA and the flagpole right now. We are at a standstill with that. It’s not an ongoing issue.”

—Farina, the executive director of the Emery Village Business Improvement Area, said this to the Star when questioned about the status of a plan to build North America’s largest flagpole near Finch Avenue and Highway 400. Approved by city council in 2010 after some intense lobbying by local councillor Giorgio Mammoliti (Ward 7, York West), the huge pole was supposed to become a patriotic tourist attraction. Now, more than two years after it was supposed to have been erected (heh, heh) the Star says the City still hasn’t even gotten as far as buying the land.

Probably because everyone is seriously embarrassed by the entire concept and realized just how stupid it is.

    • glenn_storey

      well, everyone but mammolitti.

      • vampchick21

Well, he did have that brain surgery recently, so there’s always hope!

        • dsmithhfx

That must have been interesting. ‘WTF is this!?’.

          • the_lemur

According to Mammoliti, as quoted in the Star, the flagpole is still a going concern. Last I heard, the BIA was in no hurry to contribute to Mammoliti’s flagpole fund, though.

          • vampchick21

            Compensating?

          • the_lemur

Maybe … or maybe just delusional about getting the city to spend $5M to buy the land and persuading 2700+ businesses to chip in $1300 each for something that will most likely draw zero visitors.
People’ll be able to point to it from the 400 though, that’ll be nice.

          • vampchick21

            I’ll go with compensating….*childish snigger*

  • Dinah Might

So it’s not too late to make it a Ferris wheel instead! :-D

  • Torontopoly

    Gravy flag?

    • dsmithhfx

      With maple-bacon goodness!

  • Rock_dawg

I’m still confused how a giant flagpole is a tourist attraction?
The Clark Griswald’s of the world will point out to their uninterested kids how tall it is as they pass it on the highway. At least until someone erects a bigger one (heh heh) and it becomes an even less significant footnote.

  • OgtheDim

Georgio prefers a flag pole over an LRT.

    • Dinah Might

That’s because flagpoles are put off to the side of the road while LRTs get built DIRECTLY THROUGH YOUR OWN HOUSE.

      • Torontopoly

        Someone hasn’t done their research.

        • vampchick21

          ummmmmm……?

        • Dinah Might

Someone hasn’t been maintaining their sarcasm detector in accordance with industry guidelines.

          • dsmithhfx

Everyone knows they DETOUR THROUGH THE GARAGE.
