Extra, Extra: Good Paywalls, Terrible Photographers, and New Jobs

Every weekday’s end, we collect just about everything you ought to care about or ought not miss.

A screencap of the Globe's paywall, in action

A screencap of the Globe‘s paywall, in action.

  • How’s the Globe and Mail‘s paywall working out? Just fine, say the paper’s executives. But things can’t be going that well, because they still won’t disclose how much money the new digital subscription service is bringing in.
  • Vice wonders: does Mayor Rob Ford’s photographer hate him?
  • Speaking of Ford, his famous crusade against graffiti has netted an unusual suspect: the 13-year-old daughter of Councillor Mary-Margaret McMahon (Ward 32, Beaches-East York).
  • Brian Burke is now completely done with the Maple Leafs. The former general manager has taken a part-time scouting job for the Anaheim Ducks.

“…the Globe did not say how many of those 80,000 subscribers were existing print subscribers as opposed to new revenue from digital subscribers.”

I’m going to guess a lot, otherwise they’d be tripping over themselves to brag about it.

    • SteveKupferman

      That’s what I’m thinking.

Good to hear about Brian Burke moving on. That guy was turfed totally unfairly. Give him a team with a little talent, then see how he does as a head coach.

Just clear your cookies and cache often and Globe’s paywall means nothing

There’s this also this thing called private browsing.

    • andrew97

If you think the Globe is worth reading, then why is it not worth paying for?

      • tyrannosaurus_rek

Do you send money to every site you think is worth reading?

And if it’s worth paying for, why do they leave the door open for anyone to enter as often as they like?

        • andrew97

I don’t send money to companies that don’t ask for it, no. As for access controls, you must also think it’s okay to sneak on to the TTC, since it’s so easy to do.

          • tyrannosaurus_rek

Is it easy to do? I’ve never tried.

          • dsmithhfx

Nah, this is more akin to reading a copy of the Globe you found on the ttc. Personally, I only ever read one or two stories in the online version. (they might have better luck with micro-payments, like $0.10 per click). I buy the print version a couple of times a week, and I have a weekend sub to The Star. The issue is that I (like most people) already pay for internet access (in my case, ~$40/mo). Publishing’s beef is with isp’s like Bell and Rogers, who should be sharing their massive profits with content providers. I just can’t feel sorry for these media conglomerates and their dinosaur ways.

          • andrew97

You realize that access and content are two different things.

          • tyrannosaurus_rek

ISPs (many of which are nowhere near as big and rich as Bell or Rogers) didn’t put the articles online, the papers did that themselves.
