And he'll probably never even call.
Hudson, the polar bear cub that was born at the Toronto Zoo a little over a year ago, isn’t so tiny anymore. At 410 pounds, he’s now big enough to go off on his own. (The photo at the top of this post was taken recently, but the others in the gallery are from back in February, when he was still fairly wee.)
And so, like any Toronto adolescent who’s led a sheltered existence, he’s leaving his mother (a zoo bear named Aurora) to embark on an ill-advised adventure in another city: Winnipeg.
He probably thinks he’ll get a job at a coffee shop and meet a cute girl with a nose ring. Oh, Hudson. Winnipeg isn’t as cool as Guy Maddin movies have probably led you to believe. Don’t expect us to bail you out after you’ve spent all your money on beer and walrus carcases.
In reality, according to a press release issued this morning by the Toronto Zoo, he’ll be moving to a brand-new polar bear conservation centre at the Assiniboine Park Zoo, sometime during the week of January 28. It looks like a pretty nice place. The Toronto Zoo will be taking him off exhibit on January 27, and shipping him out shortly after that.
We’ll miss you, small bear. Enjoy your new pad.
