The outgoing budget chief on Mayor Rob Ford.
Question: What did you think of the mayor during this budget session?
“The mayor was the mayor. It’s one of the unsolved mysteries of the universe… Whatever you want to ask that relates to him, I can’t provide a logic for you.”
—Outgoing budget chief Mike Del Grande (Ward 39, Scarborough-Agincourt), in an exit interview with the National Post. Del Grande told the mayor he was resigning yesterday immediately after city council approved the 2013 budget. Before the meeting, he had threatened to quit if councillors tinkered with the draft budget and added more spending—about $12 million was, in fact, added during the debate. He also cited another motion which passed, asking staff to develop ways of making the budget process more transparent, as a personal affront (he called it a “vilification” in his speech at council) as a final straw.
