The Master Dominates the Toronto Film Critics Association’s 2012 Awards

The TFCA bows down to P.T.A.

“All hail Paul Thomas Anderson” is the refrain from the Toronto Film Critics Association, which today named Anderson’s The Master the Best Picture of 2012. The film, an enthralling portrait of the bond between a wayward Second World War veteran and an enigmatic cult leader, also received nods for Best Director and Best Screenplay, and Philip Seymour Hoffman won Best Supporting Actor for his mesmerizing portrayal of the film’s titular Svengali.

The Master’s Joaquin Phoenix and Amy Adams were among the finalists for the Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress categories, respectively, though those awards ultimately went to Denis Lavant and Gina Gershon. Lavant’s citation is well-deserved, considering the fact that he turned in in no fewer than 11 transfixing performances in Leo Carax’s brilliantly bizarre Holy Motors. Gershon, too, is well worthy of recognition for a fearless, chicken drumstick–fellating turn in William Friedkin’s Killer Joe.

In terms of Canuck talent, Sarah Polley’s Stories We Tell was named the year’s Best Documentary, while Panos Cosmatos, the Vancouverite director of Beyond the Black Rainbow, shared Best First Feature honours with Benh Zeitlin’s Beasts of the Southern Wild. The TFCA also put forward its final nominees for its Best Canadian Film Award, to be announced on January 8 at the organization’s annual gala. Polley’s Stories We Tell, Michael Dowse’s Goon, and Denis Côté’s Bestiare are all vying to claim the Rogers-backed award, which includes a handsome $100,000 cash prize.

The TFCA is an industry association that consists of film journalists who are based in the Toronto area. All of Torontoist‘s film writers are members.
