City Councillor Ana Bailão Charged with Impaired Driving

Ward 18 representative pulled over early this morning.

Both Toronto police and staff in her office are confirming that councillor Ana Bailão (Ward 18, Davenport) was charged with impaired driving after being pulled over at approximately 1:45 this morning. The councillor was pulled over near Bathurst and Harbord; the Globe is reporting that officers stopped her after observing something in her driving (as opposed to a random check). She is scheduled to appear in court on December 3.

UPDATE 2:20 PM: Councillor Bailão has released a written statement about this morning’s charges, which reads in full:

I can confirm that on October 16, I was charged with impaired driving. This situation is regrettable. I have been advised by my legal counsel that because this matter is before the courts that I have no further comment.

Ana – just work on a marijuana possession, domestic abuse, and public intoxication, and some day you might just be Mayor!!

Ya.. wow.. with all the spotlight off of Ford lately (this and yesterday McGuinty) I bet he’s taking a well deserved breather.. heavy breather mind you.. but a breather all the same.

Assuming she lives in the ward she represents, it’s really not hard to take transit to get home, especially from anywhere near Bathurst and Harbord.

wonder if she was swerving to hit a cyclist in her lane

How embarrassing for her to be on the internet after being pulled over by the police. She has followed through though, issuing a statement that it did happen, and she will have no further comment until this charge goes through the courts.

Drunk drivers deserve our sympathy and votes, not public shaming.

  • gee

ford is backing her up a hundred percent. i wonder why?

The Metro Toronto Convention Centre is about 6 km from her home near Bloor & Dufferin. There is transit that she could have taken, even nearly 4 hours later, that would have just meant being buzzed/drowsy when she was halfway home.

Was she drinking with the Mayors group?
Some role model given his past drunkeness..

    “This situation is regrettable.”

Drunk drivers kill. This situation is far more than regrettable. Shame on her.

Pretty impersonal and weaselly non-apology as well. It’s regrettable, i.e., it could be regretted, but does she personally regret it? That would be admitting culpability.
