      “Desire paths”. William H. Whyte, founder of Project for Public Spaces and a really clever public space urbanist, suggested that cool climates should wait until winter before doing any new public space improvement, especially in parks. In winter you have the advantage of studying the snow to see where people really want to travel. Then, he said, you can put down paths that are actually useful to people — or at least anticipate the inconvenience of your project and make it lovely for those who have to go around it.
