Vandalist: Abstract Expressionism

A new take on tagging.

FIELD NOTES: A general consensus among urbanites is that the graffiti that’s had some time and effort put into it is simply swell, but all the quick tags are a scourge on the city. In most places, the cycle of tag and repaint leaves little time for them to accumulate. There are some pockets, though, where no one makes the effort to repaint their property. When you get enough tags, like in this colourful photograph, the stylized fonts and layering take on a striking abstract effect. Say what you will about this “scourge,” but, if you look at them from the right perspective, tags can be beautiful.
