Newsstand: August 31, 2012

We're aghast, it’s the last day of August. In the news: deporting war resisters; teachers get by with a little help from their friends; rooming houses where no rooming house should be; a missing swimmer, maybe.

War, what is it good for? Absolutely nothing, nothing. Say it again, Kimberly Rivera, American war resister. After living in Toronto for the past five years, Rivera and her family found out yesterday that they would be deported back to the States as soon as September 20. While on leave in 2007, Rivera came to Canada to avoid a second tour of duty in Iraq, a war with which she had become disillusioned. Rivera lives here with her husband and their four children (the two youngest were born in Canada). The family and their lawyers are looking into their options, but Rivera probably faces jail time if she goes back.

That nasty bit of provincial legislature, the one that would essentially remove the right for teachers and school boards to negotiate for at least the next two years and force a labour agreement on them, is all set to pass with the help of the Conservatives. However, if it does, it will not go by without a fight. The Canadian Civil Liberties Association has stated that it will apply for intervener status on any legal challenge to Daddy Dalton’s bill.

Living with roommates can be great fun. You cook together and clean together; there is always someone around to watch a movie or play a board game with. But what about 12 roommates who you’ve never met before, or even expected to have met before? Rooming houses are currently illegal in both Scarborough and North York, but hey, there are a lot of terrible landlords out there that don’t seem to care (then again, $380 for half a bed sounds pretty good). All told, cases like this raise questions about the lack of affordable rental housing in the city.

A swimmer may have gone missing at Woodbine Beach yesterday. Around 3:10 p.m., a group of children reported seeing a person swimming out to a buoy; when they looked back a few moments later, the person in the water was gone. By 6:30 p.m., the police search of the lake had returned nothing and it was called off. Police are now looking at missing person reports to see if someone who may have been at the water is unaccounted for.
