Extra, Extra: Redundant Wording, Delicious Burgers, and Loud Aircraft

Every weekday’s end, Extra, Extra collects just about everything you ought to care about or ought not miss.

This billboard is located near Dundas Street and Lansdowne Avenue. Photo by reader Eva H.D.

  • The Toronto International Film Festival is just over a week away, but RBC, one of the fest’s sponsors, seems to have taken an oddly meta approach to its tie-in advertising. The Toronto International Film Festival Festival? (Related: Everyone please stop referring to ATMs as “ATM machines.”)
  • Attention, burger fans: if you’re tired of going all the way to Scarborough for your Five Guys fix, you’ll be happy to know that the famed fast-food chain is in the process of opening a location right in Yonge-Dundas Square.
  • The Canadian International Air Show will be happening on Labour Day weekend, as it does every year. But another annual air-show-related occurrence has already begun: the bitching.
  • Ward 34 councillor and Ford ally Denzil Minnan-Wong is so against government taxes and fees that he will now personally warn you about speed traps.

CORRECTION: August 29, 2012, 9:25 AM This post originally stated that Five Guys is already open in Leaside. That location is not yet open.

No, they’re correct : TIFF (dot) is the master brand. It’s not an acronym for Toronto International Film Festival. Case in point: TIFF Cinematheque; TIFF Kids; TIFF Bell Lightbox; TIFF First Wave; TIFF Nexus.

    TIFF Festival.

It sounds weird but it’s right :)

If it’s not an acronym for Toronto International Film Festival, why is it called that?

      • Evan

People don’t say “I’m attending the TIFF festival” But one might say, “I’m attending the TIFF Kids festival.” Correct: “I’m attending TIFF”

You know how the C in OCADU doesn’t mean anything? Like that.

        Letters? No, no; pronounceable shapes!

Also not to nitpick as well, but call them ABMs not ATMs here in the Great White North. But yeah, calling them a ABM machine is redundant.

    • Anonymous

I’ve never once heard someone call them ABMs.

      • Anonymous

I hear ABMs much more often than ATMs, but not as often as ‘bank machine’.

        • Eric S. Smith

Not sure if I hear “(bank) machine,” or “ATM” more often, but I don’t think I’ve ever heard or seen “ABM” outside of official bank press releases and brochures. I wonder if it varies by region.

Pretty sure that ABM arose back when the banks were hoping you’d forget they were firing tellers and replacing them with the machines.

That Fiorito article was pretty funny.
