Spotted: Doug Ford’s Website Hacked

Doug Ford's website, as it appeared earlier this afternoon.

SPOTTED BY: Stephen Spencer Davis

WHERE: Dougford.ca

WHEN: June 12, 2012

WHAT: Ward 2 councillor (and mayoral sibling) Doug Ford’s constituency website is ordinarily a pretty boring place, full of contact information for Ford’s office and little posts about issues of concern to North Etobicoke residents. Now, apparently, thanks to some hacker who calls himself “Dbuzz,” all of that has been replaced by a super-kewl neon handprint melting into some water, above shout-outs to some other people who must be Dbuzz’s best internet friends. Pretty rad.

I don’t think it’s rad at all. It’s obviously childish and is it not a form of cyber-squatting and prosecutable?

I guess you think it’s rad due to crazy Doug Ford context? What if it where Pride Toronto, or name your favourite Toronto councillor and imagine their constituency website being similarly hacked? Exactly what would Torontoist’s tone of reportage be?

The man, crazy to you and me, is a duly elected official and carries on some form of official councillor business via this website. And you think it’s super-kewl to hack democratic governmental function.

This is extremely immature, pandering journalism.

I think he was joking when he said it, considering it was preceded by “super-kewl” and “some other people who must be Dbuzz’s best internet friends”.

As a side note, cyber squatting isn’t illegal, but accessing a computer without authorization (whether or not it is secured) is illegal. I don’t know what the penalty is here, but in the States its a felony with a possible 5 year jail term.

Ashleigh, that comment was totally articulate and way more cohesive and gramatically correct than anything on the Sun online comment section (or even the Toronto Sun in print, for that matter) but you don’t know the grade 3 difference between “were”, “where”, and “we’re”. That and you can’t even spell “Ashley”.

I think your criticism of the article completely misses the point.

As for the hacking, the author(s) was/were really doing Dougie a favor, when s/he/they (probably) could have rather easily done something far more subtle and insidious.

Let your limited imagination run wild.

If Dougie is capable of learning, and that as we all know is in considerable doubt, he will find himself a new webmaster who is acquainted with security.
