Scene: Fire at the High Park Playground

Local kids and their parents visit the burnt shell of the Jamie Bell Adventure Playground, hours after an apparent case of arson.

WHERE: Jamie Bell Adventure Playground, High Park

WHEN: Saturday, 11 a.m.

WHAT: In 1998, children, their parents, and local volunteers worked together to design and build a playground in High Park. It had turrets and ropes and slides and panels painted by the kids themselves, and in 2003 it was named after community leader Jamie Bell, who came up with the idea in the first place. At about 3 a.m. this morning the largely wooden playground caught fire; circumstances are suspicious and authorities are investigating whether arson was the cause.

    Of-course it was arson.
How else would it have gone up in flames???
-Things don’t typically go into flames at 3am by themselves.

Probably some idiot teenagers who feel the need to make a stupid point.

I don`t think there was point being made. Just a group of selfish kids that refuse to mature. See a lot of directionless kids theses days.
I have gotten old enough I can now make comments like that.

As a teenager I am not only sicked by this but also disgusted how my peers can do something like this. I just want to say that not all of us are like this and the majority of us ARE respectable members of the community and society. I apologize on behalf of these unidentified perpetrators but can assure that I don’t relate to them.

you can join the facebook group to help rebuild the playground http://www.facebook.com/groups/278795985529502/ hopefully getting enough people to get the materials donated and the workers for free

There’s arson as in deliberately setting fire to it and then there’s setting fire to it through negligence, as in leaving a lit cigarette near flammable trash. Either way, if the culprits are identified, I’d like them to be made to rebuild it.

The Big Slide was built by volunteers (including me) in just three days. It can be rebuilt just as easily.

The city and volunteers should be able to rebuild the playground bigger and better than before.

Unless as part of the cost savings, it could end up on hold. After all, kids are not taxpayers.

BTW. During the Great Depression, the High Park Zoo remained open. However, with the current manufactured budget problema at city hall, the High Park Zoo could close.

    I got one question.

Will Rob Ford be there to pay a visit this weekend and commiserate?

Cause, dollars to donuts, Miller would have.

Just like he went up to Finch West to see the bridge collapses that needed fixing.

Rob does retail politics, but only when its people complaining or suits his message.

David Miller lives just north of High Park. Its in his neighbourhood.

If there’s a call for volunteers to rebuild this I’m game. It’s sad to see a wooden playground go down. Not many of those left.

Besides punishing senseless hatred (police can take care of that), community can pull together and make the playground better then it was.

I’m not exactly sure why some people have decided it was teenagers. Ok, if it turns out to be people in their teens, fine–but until then, leave them out of it. Young people get enough crap without being blamed for this too.

If it was a pyro then we’re lucky they burned down a playground and not a home in Swansea or Roncesvalles.

Someone should set up a facebook group to help rebuild the playground

I’m from New York City and was shooting a music video there two weekends ago. We were so happy to see such a classic playground for kids to play in. This is truly sad. I hope they restore it.
