TDSB By-Elections Are Settled

The Toronto District School Board by-election was yesterday, and we know now that the winners are Sam Sotiropoulos, an IT specialist who advocates for “traditional family values” (according to his website, whatever that means) and Harout Manougian, an electrical engineer. They’ll represent TDSB Wards 20 (Scarborough-Agincourt) and 17 (Don Valley East), respectively. Mary Hynes (a.k.a. “Yelly Granny“), a candidate in Ward 17, sadly lost by a few more than 300 votes, despite an impressive bunch of endorsements. TDSB held the by-election in order to fill the seats occupied by former trustees Michael Coteau and Soo Wong, who both became MPPs in October.

I’m just going to say it: he looks like the son from Breaking Bad.

I thought TRUSTEES had to have been teachers themselves at some point. It used to be like that about 15 years ago. I mean, how can you be school board trustee when you don’t understand the system from both perspectives, as a teacher and a student? There were so many amazing candidates who were teachers, and this is who was voted in. Wow! Michael Coteau was a teacher himself, and so was Wong if I remember. However, Denzil Minnan-Wong wasn’t, from what I heard and remember. I guess this explains why the TDSB isn’t successful as it was in 2005 in terms of exams and testing, and why they need to curve grades so that students can actually attend college.
