Scene: Students Rally for Lower Tuition

WHERE: Queen’s Park South

WHEN: Wednesday, February 1

WHAT: At a rally organized by the Canadian Federation of Students-Ontario, hundreds of protesters gathered outside the provincial legislature to demand that the McGuinty government’s new tuition rebates—which benefit only full-time students with family incomes at or below the low six-figure range—be extended to all students. Ironically, this occurred on the same day the first of those rebate cheques were sent out.

Oddly, those rebate cheques aren’t avilable to students who pay taxes in Ontario (or with parents who do) and go to university outside the province. They should be.

They also aren’t available to students who have been out of high school for more than four years, and aren’t undergraduates. I’m not sure if the Star just forgot to check the numbers or they just like be sarcastic, but 70 000 checks amounts to only about 10% of fulltime undergraduate students. I don’t think that’s irony as much as legitimate grievance.

Right on!! Those poor 1%ers shouldn’t have to pay today’s outrageous tuition fees!

If only the 1% sent students to college, we’d have a lot fewer students…

1%er households in Canada earn $150K+. So here we actually have 1%ers protesting that the 99% should pay their tuition & loans.

The absurdity of the situation sink in yet?
