Police Officer Charged with Murder

For the first time in the history of the Toronto police force, an officer is facing a murder charge for actions taken while on duty. Constable David Cavanagh has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of Eric Osawe, age 26, who was shot in 2010 in the midst of an apartment search. Cavanagh was originally charged with manslaughter, in December 2010; he has been out on bail since that time. Today’s more serious charge indicates that investigators believe Cavanagh didn’t just shoot Osawe but actively intended to kill him, and follows an SIU investigation of the case.
