—Mississauga mayor Hazel McCallion, flatly rejecting councillor and TTC commissioner Frank Di Giorgio’s assertion that the TTC should fire (now former) Chief General Manager Gary Webster, for failing to support Rob Ford’s subway aspirations. Adding insult to injury: the opening of the Star‘s article reads “Hazel McCallion, arguably the most powerful mayor in Canada.” Ouch.

    I am not interested in either fanatics of the left or right, who want to remove politicians who were elected by the people of Toronto. At the same time, it would be nice if subway trains did not break down due to poor or non-existent maintenance on a regular basis and if someone was accountable for that. I understand that all the toilets in the subway system will shortly be renovated at the same time, forcing commuters to rely on private(non-existent at 7 am) toilets that will cost $3 for each time they are used if the commuter does not have a Metropass. We had a similar lack of planning around the years 1999/2000 when all the escalators were taken down and rebuilt at the same time, forcing the disabled to take either Wheeltrans or the taxi. Of course there were continuing problems on the escalators and some had to be rebuilt a couple of more times. And the new sheppard subway escalators were all installed improperly(by contractors of course). Poor planning and management by the TTC all around,.
