Scene: Fire Near High Park

WHERE: Pacific Avenue, near Bloor Street

WHEN: Approximately 7 p.m. Monday night

WHAT: Firefighters bring a house fire under control on Pacific Avenue, near High Park subway station. The homes near Bloor Street and Pacific Avenue have been abandoned for some time and are zoned for multi-level residential buildings. The abandoned properties have been known to host squatters intermittently. The house in question had no people inside it, firefighters and police were tight-lipped about possible causes. There was another fire at a house on the same block of abandoned buildings, this time on Oakmount Road near Bloor, in May 2011. Developer Daniels corporation has proposed to build a 14-storey condo on the site.

    There should be a law against tearing down century old houses to build condos.

    There are some great houses here and it’s a real shame to see them abandoned and soon to be demolished. With the lack of low-income housing in this city, why not have the city purchase and run them? Too many condos here in High Park already, but I’m sure this city’s leadership is all too developer friendly.
