Driver of Truck That Collided with Jenna Morrison Won’t Face Charges

After conducting an extensive investigation into the death of cyclist Jenna Morrison on November 7, Toronto Police have announced they will not lay charges against the 55-year-old truck driver involved, the Globe reports. Police say the driver did nothing illegal. This news comes the day after hundreds of cyclists took part in a memorial ride for Morrison. Her friends and family gathered for a funeral last night at Bloor Street United Church.

It seems like motorists never get charged for killing cyclists.

Agreed, but it’s been pointed out before that there’s no way to prove guilt in this case.

I can’t help but feel that if he’d done the same thing to another motorist, charges would have been laid. Perhaps for some technical thing, but he’d be held responsible.

To be fair though, we really have no idea who was at fault here, or if it was just a dumb-luck accident.

The situation the following day on Harbord Street, where the driver chased someone onto the sidewalk…well, that’s a different story. That guy should be charged with assault, at least, and he should never be allowed behind the wheel of a car again. Or at least not until he’s proven he’s less prone to potentially homicidal rage.

Honestly I find that no mater what the “law” states with regards to vehicular accidents – it is a lethal and deadly weapon that requires a higher calibre of responsibility.

When a human life is measured against so much steel and so much power, the moment it’s in the hands of someone willing to push the boundaries of legal or illegal action on the road, (which occurs daily), that individuals actions must be made accountable.

Being both a driver, a parent and serious cyclist, I will always give a human life priority over everything else while on the road. Anything else is pure negligence, and by all practical and scientific purposes there is no way that someone, on a bicycle or otherwise, can end up under the wheels of your car without you being seriously neglectful, reckless, irreverent and irresponsible.

I am horrified both with the standards of the law and the lack of human/community influence and impetus to see that a statement of both justice and reprisal is made clear – that cutting corners with humans lives while in the safety of your vehicle is punishable offense.
