Scene: Strike Rally at York Region Municipal Headquarters

WHERE: York Region Municipal Headquarters (17250 Yonge Street).

WHEN: 10:30 a.m.

WHAT: York Region Transit workers ramped up what’s been a relatively quiet strike with a rally and march on York Region Municipal headquarters today. Several hundred employees gathered to protest a lack of sick days and a $22 hourly wage, which is seven dollars less than their Toronto counterparts receive. Speakers included Sid Ryan from the Ontario Federation of Labour; John Cartwright, president of the York Region Labour Council; Bob Kinnear, president of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 113; and Ray Doyle, president of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1587. Kinnear and Doyle believe their unions pursuing rallies instead of picket lines will limit commuter confrontation and aggravation, letting them focus on the issues at hand.

CORRECTION: October 27, 2011, 4:57 PM This article originally stated that the rally was taking place at 17250 Yonge Street.
CORRECTION: October 27, 2011, 5:59 PM Due to a misunderstanding, the address was mistakenly corrected. The initial address of 17250 Yonge Street is accurate, but the rally is at York Regional Municipal Headquarters, not York Region Transit.

This rally is taking place at the York Region Municipal Headquarters. The YRT Headquarters is at 50 High Tech Road in Richmond Hill. Please fix this to avoid confusion!

Rather than a set number of sicks days, why not have a system whereby if a medical professional says you can’t work, you get (paid) time off? Otherwise, time off is either vacaction time or unpaid.
