TIFF Scenes: In Which Ryan Gosling and George Clooney Attract No Attention At All
Friday night was probably the biggest night for celeb-hunters at TIFF, as George Clooney, Ryan Gosling, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, et al took to the red carpet at Roy Thomson Hall.
- Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie arrive for the premiere of Moneyball.
- Mandatory shot of adoring fan.
- There was much adoration going on.
- Jonah Hill, co-star of Moneyball.
- Philip Seymour Hoffman is in both Moneyball and Ides of March. In other news: Philip Seymour Hoffman is the best.
- Stephen Bishop.
- Ryan Gosling brought his mom, Donna.
- What are they all waiting for? Who could it be?
- This guy! George Clooney’s Ides of March premiered right after Moneyball.
- Evan Rachel Wood has no time for ballgown frippery.
- Jeffrey Wright wants YOU!
- Marisa Tomei.
- Co-star Max Minghella with his girlfriend, actor Kate Mara.
- Paul Giamatti.
- Bono decided to come hang out with his friends.
- Meanwhile, earlier in the day Bono and co. did a press conference for their documentary From the Sky Down. Though Bono repeatedly noted he hated watching himself on screen, he generously remarked that he “nearly enjoyed it last night.” From left to right: David Guggenheim, Bono, The Edge, Thom Powers.
- “U2 has been on the verge of being irrelevant for the past 20 years…this moment now feels really close to irrelevant.” Sure.
- The Edge reacts to Bono saying there’s only one U2 song he can stand listening to (“Miss Sarajevo”).
- As always, it’s all about the little guys with Bono. And now a round of applause for those volunteers!
- Also yesterday, a presser for Ides of March.
- Tensions mount as Ryan Gosling prepares to make a run at Clooney’s People-certified World’s Sexiest Man dynasty.
- Paul Giamatti.
- Jeffrey Wright and Max Minghella.
- Every time Gosling said something nice about Clooney, Clooney tossed him $100.
- Gosling said many nice things.
TIFF attracts people who like movies, and also people who like people who are in movies. Last night was all about the latter, as two not-great films—Moneyball and Ides of March—had their premieres. The hype was about the stars rather than the flicks they star in, and quite the hype it was. Traffic on King was at a near standstill as fans choked the streets around Roy Thomson Hall to get shouty about George and Brad and Angelina.
Earlier in the day Bono, lead singer of U2, charity worker, and his Irish Highness attended a press conference following the Gala Presentation of From the Sky Down, David Guggenheim’s latest film on the making of the band’s 1991 album, Achtung Baby. Whether you love U2 or find it to be mundane stadium rock, no man is more recognizable for his eyewear than Bono (Torontoist unfortunately lost a bet with The Grid on what colour his eyewear would be). Joined by U2 guitarist The Edge, Guggenheim, and TIFF programmer Thom Powers, the four vaguely talked about the movie (this is a film fest after all) but mainly about, well, U2 and then attempted to take questions from Twitter.
