Love Torontoist? Love Words? Come Join Us.

dawnhiring.jpg

Reminder: we are on the lookout for people to join our team! Applications close Monday at 5 p.m.

You already read us. You love Toronto. And you have a way with words.
Clearly, you should join our staff.
We are on the hunt for a few new key people: one or two copy editors, to keep our contributors’ fine content in fine shape; and a Newsstand writer, to recap the news and make sure our readers start the day off right. Each is fun, each pays (modestly!), and each is a core position, essential to keeping us at our best.
Interested? Keep reading.

If you’re wondering whether Torontoist is a good fit for you, check out our Contribute page to find out more about what we can offer you and what we’re looking for in all our contributors. (You can ignore the “What We Want When You Apply” section of that page, though.)

Copy Editor

Torontoist‘s copy editors—a rarity in the online world!—look over posts before they’re published and polish the already great work of our almost perfect contributors to a fine sheen. The gig is ideal for someone who is at a computer during work hours and can, at regular intervals, replace hyphens with en dashes. (Okay, it’s more involved and more exciting than that. We promise.) We’re looking for someone who can be on duty for one or two days a week. Previous copy editing experience and a familiarity with CP style are preferred but not mandatory. Word-nerdiness is required, however.
What we want when you apply: Tell us about yourself, and why you’re interested in the position. Then copy edit a post from our archives (a fairly long one is best) and show us exactly what you’d change about it, while still preserving the writer’s voice and intent (a big part of the job). Use Track Changes in Word so we can see what you did and attach the text as a .doc when you apply. Please also list one reference we can contact who can attest to your awesomeness.

Newsstand Writer

Newsstand is our morning digest of local news from media outlets across the city, published at 8 a.m. every weekday and 10 a.m. every Saturday. We’re looking for an organized, meticulous, well-read, interesting, and interested writer with terrific curatorial skills, an early schedule, and (when appropriate) a decent sense of humour, to take on writing Newsstand two mornings a week.
What we want when you apply: Tell us about yourself and why you’re interested in writing Newsstand; include links to relevant writing samples if you have any. Then, write a demo Newsstand so we can get a sense of your style. For a day of your choosing—pick any of July, 2011—write up an edition of Newsstand that you think would have been a good fit on Torontoist.

To apply, email us at hiring@torontoist.com, with either “Newsstand” or “Copy Editor” in the subject line.
Please get your submissions in by 5 p.m. on Monday, July 25. We promise to look at and reply to every single one! (Bear with us though, as that process may take a bit of time.)
