Duly Quoted: Karen Stintz

“I value the Toronto Public Library and can assure my constituents that these are not the type of cuts that I will support.”
—Karen Stintz (Ward 16, Eglinton-Lawrence), writing in her blog about proposed cuts to Toronto libraries, which are among the many services the City might consider reducing in light of its ongoing core service review. Optimists are inclined to interpret this as a new and potentially significant fissure within the Ford administration (Stintz is the Ford-appointed TTC Chair). Pessimists are guessing that major library cuts aren’t seriously under consideration, and that politicians are threatening to cut libraries to provide cover for other, and possibly more troubling (but lower profile) cuts that will proceed in the meantime.

Uhoh. Disagreeing with Ford? That's a paddlin'.

I expect the same fate for Karen Stintz as TTC Chief General Manager Gary Webster.

Karen, the PUBIC Library sounds interesting. Where is it?

She’s pushing back on the unfunded Sheppard subway, too, out of an apparent awareness that money doesn’t grow on trees.  And what she proposes instead is a compromise, so she’s definitely not a Fordian thinker.

(Now that I think about it, if money did grow on trees, the Fords would probably insist on cutting those trees down to make room for wider roads.)
