Duly Quoted: Denzil Minnan-Wong

“I think that if you have more roads you will have traffic run better.”
Councillor Denzil Minnan-Wong (Ward 34, Don Valley East), when asked by us if he believes that removing the bike lanes on Jarvis and returning a fifth lane for motor vehicles will improve traffic. This despite multiple studies showing that increasing road capacity does not improve traffic or decrease gridlock.

Yeah, yeah. All those high-fallutin' “studies” from “experts” and “people who know what they're talking about” might say one thing. But Ford & Co. know in their gut what's truthy and right. They don't need those elitistic snobs telling 'em what's what. More roads means less traffic. What I feels, I says. Take that and shove it, pinkos.

I think if we had fewer Denzil Minnan-Wong and Rob Ford types on council, the city would run better!

He's right, in a way. The new 6-lane Jarvis has a 7% higher rush-hour capacity!  It's just that the 7% increase is all bicycles, and people on bicycles aren't Real Traffic.

“More roads means less traffiic”. Yeah, traffic on the 401 really eased up when they expanded from 8 to 16 lanes. Since they built the 407 as a relief highway, well, the 401 is just a delight to drive on. And those new lanes on the QEW have reduced the commute from Hamilton by 2 minutes, but you still have to sit in stop and go traffic from Oakville to Spadina. More roads means people are working, building roads. Great job creation program, but  they do nothing to reduce traffic congestion.

“If you build it, they will come.”

Who needs “facts”, and “studies”, and “experts”? DM-W has “truthiness”.

…Desperately hoping my sarcasm came through.

This isn't about facts or truth or studies. It's about sticking it to cyclists. Nothing more satisfying than a good dose of what @cityslikr once called spite-based policymaking, even if it actually makes things worse for everyone.

This idiot has the nerve to flaunt his Bike Union membership while at the same time threatens to rip up a bike infrastructure. DMW is totally the type of “cyclist” who's bought a $10,000 bike with all of the gear and only rides it on Sundays down a path in a secluded forrest once a month.

    Dear Mr Minnan-Wong,

    You think wrong.
