Streetcar Service Returning to Roncesvalles

TTC Good news for west end residents: their long, arduous saga with Roncesvalles roadwork is coming to its final end. The TTC has just advised that construction work has been completed “ahead of schedule”—though since that schedule includes a delay after last year’s work took longer than expected, that language might be debatable—and streetcar service will resume between Queen Street West and Dundas West Station beginning at 4:30 a.m. tomorrow. The 504 replacement buses will continue to run on Roncesvalles between the Queensway and Sunnyside Loop until July 30.

UPDATE: June 24, 2011, 3:45 PM We just received a media advisory from the City clarifying its earlier release about the construction on Roncesvalles. It says that construction has, in fact, been completed ahead of schedule, but full streetcar service will not resume until July 30. Until then, shuttle buses will run between Queen Street and the Dundas West subway, “augmented with streetcar service when available.”

Now we just need a massive education campaign to keep cars, people and bikes from colliding with each other on the streetcar bumpouts that no one understands!

Yeah, I sort of agree. Maybe just more signage will do the trick: colouring the bike portion, or at least putting the bike stencil on them (currently neither), plus bollards to keep people from parking at the end of the ramps and funnel cyclists onto them, should do nicely. But the infrastructure itself is good.
