Police Officer Charged in Connection with G20 Assault

G20/POLICING This morning, the Toronto Star published the name of the police officer who has been at the centre of a revolving door of SIU investigations looking into the assault of a Toronto man during the G20. Dorian Barton was taken to hospital with a broken arm and multiple bruises after being tackled by police, and though many other officers were on the scene at the time, none had come forward to identify the one who allegedly hit him. The SIU and the police more generally have come under harsh criticism for the so-called “wall of blue,” the practice of protecting fellow officers and failing to cooperate with investigations. Today, on the basis of the badge number discernible in enlarged photos of the scene, the Star alleged that Police Constable Glenn Weddell was the officer responsible for the attack on Barton. Weddell has now been charged with assault causing bodily harm.

As wonderful as it is that a few of the G20 weekend's “bad apples” have now been charged, it's a shame (to say the least) that the absence of a public inquiry has turned the entire debacle into a case of “a few bad apples”. 1100 arrested, laws passed in secret and deliberately misapplied, hundreds of millions spent on security and our Charter treated like toilet paper. But at least they charged 2 cops.

I think this is evidence that we need to replace the SIU with an oversight board with teeth.

Today's events just shows the “bad apples” that they'll have the full support of their peers and the Police Association when they break the law.

We can make Dalton McGuinty pay for his role in this come Autumn's election.

While I won't be supporting McGuinty either (undecided between Green or NDP), I suspect and fear that running from the Liberals will only deliver us a Hudak.

I have no doubt that a Tory government at Queen's Park would have been an even more vocal cheerleader of the G20 security regime and would have participated eagerly in the deceptions that surrounded it.

I have no doubt at all that Hudak or some other Tory pinhead would probably have made the G20 even worse, but I'm not going to reward the Liberals for not being Tories.

A very similar reluctance bought us four more years of Stephen Harper.

I'm not going to vote for a candidate out of fear of another.

A very similar reluctance also bought us a NDP official opposition, and a seemingly more proactive youth (especially the Pages)

Still, which will prove to matter more in the direction of the country—the existence of a majority, or the colour of the opposition?

This is why I wish that I could buy a spacesuit for my policewoman doll, but the manufacturer doesn't sell different clothes like they used to.
