Love Toronto? Love Words? Come Write for Us.
You already read us. You love Toronto. And you love words.
Clearly, you should join our staff.
We’re on the hunt for a few new voices—insightful, witty, spirited—to expand the range of stories we tell about the city.
Interested? Keep reading.
What we’re looking for: a new Urban Planner, and expanded coverage in a few specific areas. If you’re interested in food culture, architecture and urban design, visual arts, the environment, and—especially—in covering some of the city’s many culturally and geographically diverse neighbourhoods and communities, we’d love to hear from you. And if you’re a general interest writer who wants to cover daily life in Toronto, we’d love to have more of that, too.
If you’re wondering whether Torontoist is a good fit for you, check out our Contribute page to find out more about what we can offer you and what we’re looking for in all our contributors.
Sound good so far? Here are a few more details…
Urban Planner
Urban Planner is our curated daily event-listings feature, published every weekday and in a weekend edition on Friday afternoons. The job requires not only a strong writer but also an extremely organized and very tuned-in collator, someone able to curate effectively and give Torontoist‘s readers the best to-do list in the city. The job is evenly split between several people; you’d write listings for just a day or two a week. What we want when you apply: Tell us about yourself, and why you’re interested in the position—no resumés, just a bit of a narrative so we can get a sense of who you are. Then, give us a demo day of listings: pick a day in the future, and write an Urban Planner post as though you already had the job. (You don’t need to worry about the image for the post, mind you.)
Writers
Torontoist‘s mandate is to tell stories about Toronto—its people, its neighbourhoods, its culture, and all the day-to-day moments that make up life in the city. Writing for us requires an eye for detail and insatiable curiosity about Toronto; our contributors write as little as once a month or as much as three times a week, depending on their interests. What we want when you apply: Tell us about yourself, and why you’re interested in the position—no resumés, just a bit of a narrative so we can get a sense of who you are. Then, follow the rest of the guidelines that you’ll find right here.
To apply, email us at hiring@torontoist.com, with either “Urban Planner” or “Writer: [subject area(s) of interest]” in the subject line.
Please get your submissions in by 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 2. We promise to look at and reply to every single one.
