Toronto’s Most Memorable Kids in the Hall Moments

If your attitudes towards to the world were steeped in repetitive viewings of The Kids in the Hall, then chances are you feel a good deal of civic pride living in Toronto. Though the bulk of the seminal comedy show’s sketches and short films were shot at the CBC studios, savvy viewers (and Torontonians) may recognize the occasional Hogtown landmark popping up as David Foley, Bruce McCulloch, Mark McKinney, Scott Thompson, and Kevin McDonald bopped around the city. Because we here at Torontoist love The Kids in the Hall, and also Toronto, we put together some of our favourite “hallmarks”—which, if you’re super nerdy, can function as the map for your own Kids in the Hall–themed walking tour.

One glaring omission from this list: Mel Lastman Square

I nearly lost it when I first saw that one.

The Kids in the Hall definitely got around town. I'm hoping I never find myself in that cafe where the patrons lick everything clean.

Jacob, I was going to mention that same sketch. Back then I was studying in the North York Central Library when I saw cameras and a crew outside in Mel Lastman Square. I went outside and saw the KITH filming this sketch! I waited for the director to call Cut, and I approached each Kid one by one to tell them I was a fan. They were all great, and I'm still a fan to this day.

This is fantastic, but it doesn't answer my most burning question… what was the intersection where they filmed the opening credits of the 3rd season? (I think it was season 3, could have been 2).

It's a major intersection and they are all standing on one of it's corners for their close-up. Looks like it could be Queen & Spadina but I've never nailed it down. Could also be Broadview & Danforth?? Who knows?

Katherine, I'll check it against my DVDs sometime today or tomorrow and try to figure it out. Both locations seem likely as they did a lot of shooting around the CBC (hence Queen and Spadina) and the Leslieville/Riverdale/Danforth (hence Broadview and Danforth).

Thanks, John! I wait with baited breath… this has been bugging me for almost 20 years!!

Katherine, the intersection is Broadview and Gerrard.

And the dry cleaner near Pape and Danforth is Bestway Cleaners at Donlands and Mortimer

Toronto theatre peeps – am I wrong or is that Gina Wilkinson as the mom?

  • Steve Fisher

This is awesome—and I like how the illustrator actually got the byline for the post, so we'll be able to easily search for her future illustrations simply by clicking on her name!

(Not that John's written contributions weren't substantial. You da bomb, Semley.)

    Ha! Thanks Steve!

Good eyes, jnathaniel. Do you happen to know if journey to the top of the stairs takes place on any actual stairs to nowhere around Toronto?

    2) It’s Bestway Cleaners. It’s still operating at Donlands and Mortimer.
I understand that there’s too many great Toronto moments to list, but I would have included the Lost Dog/Do-Re-Mi sketch at Mel Lastman Square.

Where’s the bank where Mark took Bruce’s pen?!
