WHERE: Near the intersection of Yonge and Gould streets.
WHEN: Between 6:15 and 7:50 a.m., January 3, 2011.
WHAT: A six-alarm fire broke out very early this morning, at the former location of the Salad King restaurant, which also suffered extensive damage last spring. (Salad King is set to reopen soon across the street.) CBC News is reporting that at its peak, thirty-two fire trucks and 125 firefighters were battling the blaze. Ryerson University is closed for the day, and officials are expecting roads in the area to be closed until at least noon. [UPDATE, January 3, 11:21 AM: Torontoist photographer Christopher Drost has been on the scene for a while, and is reporting that Toronto Fire Service has declared the fire to be officially out. TFS is planning to remain monitor the site over the next twenty-four hours as a precaution.]

It's a definite shame. I really liked that nice, old building. Still… the wall collapse and then the fire a few months later? It seems like someone wanted that building gone…

The city designated the property under the Ontario Heritage Act on August 27, 2010. There was a meeting with a structural engineer scheduled for next week to nail down a timeline for repairing the building.

I will be very interested in the results of the Ontario Fire Marshal's investigation.

I'm not much of a conspiracy theorist but this reeks of insurance fraud and a property owner unwilling front the costs of repairs to the earlier structural collapse.

Automatically suspicious to be sure, but keep in mind that this is also the season where homeless folk find shelter in abandoned spaces and often heat themselves with small fires.

You hit the nail right on the head, brother.

Well, if it's insurance fraud, at least they had the consideration to do it on the morning of a stat holiday to avoid screwing up rush hour for everybody.
