Scene: At the Bay, Christmas Comes Way Too Early

Photos by Michael Chrisman/Torontoist.

WHERE: The Bay, at Queen and Yonge.
WHEN: Friday, October 22, at 6:30 p.m.
WHAT: At The Bay’s flagship store, it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, two months too soon. (As Dale Watson, who noticed the decorations on Thursday, put it, “WTF?”)

Really? Two months too soon? You honestly think they should wait until the third week of December to set this up?
The Bay downtown has been setting up their Christmas section in October for years. The only difference this year is that they’ve moved it from the fifth floor to the ground floor. If people weren’t buying the stuff at this time of year, year after year, they wouldn’t be doing it.
I’m not in the mood for Christmas ornament shopping in October, but if others are, well whatever makes them happy. I’m not sure why anyone would find this either surprising or noteworthy.

I’d agree that “two months too soon” might be an exaggeration, but despite the fact that it happens more and more often, I’m always surprised when Christmas comes before Halloween.

This makes over 16% of the year devoted to Christmas!

I want valentines decor in November. No exception.

I thought it was one of those unwritten rules that people don’t really get into Christmas until after American Thanksgiving. My initial reaction to this was certainly “wtf.”

For an item to be “On Sale”, it must be available before the “Sale” price at the store’s regular price. So you can’t display on a brand new item in a store, and say it is “Discounted” or “Special Sale Price”, if it never was available before.
So, the stores are now displaying their goods at their full price. Later, after a period of time (don’t know how long), they can put the items at a lower “Sale” price.

    Way. Too. Early.
    November 1st, OK, but pre-empting Hallowe’en? Blasphemy.

Whoever made that early decision should be flogged. Really. Nothing Christmas related until December 1st. Everything comes down on January 2nd.
Same goes for the other themed holidays. You get about a month ahead of the holiday day and the following day it all comes down.
