Duly Quoted: Christine Crosbie

“Women wish it were true.”
—Ontario Science Centre spokesperson Christine Crosbie talks to the National Post about the obviously fake (come on, people) Don Valley unicorn sighting. The Post‘s Mary Vallis writes that the Centre “has received calls from all kinds of people—predominantly women, and some of them confused news reporters—in response to the video.” Men, it must be inferred, are in general more apathetic about the existence of unicorns.

Well in mythology unicorns are supposed to be divining rods for virgin women – and in fact only tamable by a virgin woman – so perhaps it’s a statement about our city’s women that a unicorn has not been found, only glimpsed from afar? Crosbie obviously thinks Toronto women are a low, slatternly bunch.

    Hi there,
I told Mary what was interesting was that we’ve been getting responses from all kinds of people and that women left comments such as “this made my day” “I wish it were true”, while men tended to dissect the video and point out details such as the movement of the mane, whether the head was bobbing, horn quality, etc. This enthusiastic response suggests to us that we’re still fascinated with mythic beasts, even when there is no scientific proof they exist.
