NAME: Toronto the Good

POSTER DESIGNED BY: Marc Lostracco/Torontoist
JUDGES’ COMMENTS: “It’s classic, it’s true, and you can play it any way you like as a slogan: tongue-in-cheek, straight, whatever. Anyone who tells you that Toronto’s not Toronto the Good anymore is trying to sell you on something you don’t need.” “Any history buff out there will like this one. Just as long as it’s taken at face value (and not, say, sarcastically).”

    Marc,
Are the remnants around “Toronto the Good” intentional? Like clothing that has been removed?
And I still don’t get the slogan, never have. Were we trying to cash in somehow on the popularity of The Lord of the Rings?

“Toronto the good” is an old description of Toronto. My understanding is that it referred to the moralistic tendencies of Toronto’s political establishment (which included bans on selling alcohol, etc.). I don’t think it was ever intended as an advertising slogan.
That said, I think it makes a fine slogan.

ok, here is my 5 cents:
“toronto the yonge and the restless”

I’m starting to think the best campaign would actually show Toronto rather than tell prospective visitors something vague about how great it is.
How about a series of photos of intriguing Toronto sights framed by quotation marks, like the graphic for the initial ‘better Toronto slogan’ feature?

“Toronto the Good” is a book written in 1923 by Christopher George St. Clark. It was a common phrase at the time to capture the Victorian values, the prominence of the Orange Order, the temperance movement and other such things. Clark’s book actually reveals that this was all a sham. There was lots of prostitution, drinking and other illegal activities going on all the time. One thing that still stands out from the book was his account of prim and proper ‘ladies’ going to various colonial offices to provide their good deeds for the poor children in India, and yet horrified if her skirt happened to touch a newsboy!
    Anyway, the book’s been republished:
