What You Can Do To Help Residents of 200 Wellesley Street East

A massive fire tossed more than a thousand of them out of their homes; now, the City has released a list of ways you can help, which includes what items are most needed right now and how and where they can be dropped off, as well as how and where to donate money.

I showed up at the east door of the (familiar-to-me) Wellesley Community Centre hoping to do two things – visit the library, which TPL’s Twitter had promised would be open, and drop off a minor food donation. Two cops, two security guards, and a city worker wouldn’t let me in and claimed the library was closed. Donations were not needed, the city worker said. Clothing donations in particular were “overflowing.” Food? [sucks air] I’d have to ask a couple of people about that, she said. I asked her if she wanted this to become our own kind of Katrina.
I walked around the building to take pictures of the signs on the main doors at Sherbourne and Wellesley and bumped into Brad Fraser (!) and his friend. After almost no discussion we were let right in and sent up to the second floor for clothing donations (a single room not packed to the ceiling by any means). I asked around and found the single hidden box for food donations in the gym.
I talked to everyone I could find who looked to be in charge and asked if anyone reasonably in charge was there, but in the end I couldn’t report the following to anyone who could fix it: One door to this emergency community centre barred entry to outsiders and claimed donations weren’t needed. The other door let you right in to deliver your donations. Isn’t this a problem?
So now, apparently, we are to deliver clothing donations to the 519. Fine. That wasn’t the advice as of yesterday morning when I checked, a point I make solely because somebody’s going to do a drive-by here of some kind.
And the library branch was closed. It’ll probably be closed tomorrow, too, another day when TPL promised it would be specially opened.

Thanks for relaying this, joeclark. Hopefully it’ll enable other donations to sidestep the chaos you experienced.
