Media Outlets Distance Themselves From Wednesday’s Mayoral Poll

Wednesday’s Pollstra Research poll, showing Rob Ford leading his mayoralty competitors by a wide margin, may not be credible. Shortly after the poll was first publicized, several active Twitterers, most notably Global’s Jackson Proskow, began to investigate Pollstra’s credentials, and found them wanting. (The company is only two years old, and lists a Hamilton P.O. box as their GTA address.) The Globe and the Post have updated their articles on the poll with prominent disclaimers. The Star revised their article to exclude Pollstra entirely. Toronto Life waited until the smoke had cleared and then pronounced the poll “sketchy.” [UPDATE, 7:10 P.M.: Pollstra just posted a new FAQ about themselves, presumably to allay concerns about their legitimacy. Apparently, they actually do have offices and employees. They attribute their lack of public profile to the fact that they ordinarily don't release their poll results to the media. Jackson Proskow is now somewhat mollified. Phew?]

Media outlets and news blogs still haven’t learned how to read and judge polls and poll results. A sample size of 400-something is pretty inadequate for these purposes. Also, reporting results from a poll from an unknown firm that won’t reveal who commissioned it? C’mon. The public deserves accurate and dependable reporting, not scoop-driven misinformation.
There was a poll earlier in this mayoral race coverage where all headlines blurted that Ford was in the lead, when the difference between Ford and “2nd place” was smaller than the poll’s margin of error, therefore not a statistically significant result.
Ask the proper questions and get the proper information before releasing it to the public.

Giambrone ducked out of the race when it was revealed that his main reasons for running were that he was hungry for power and lacked integrity.
When is this going to happen with Ford?

I posted a comment about this whole matter on
Toronto Election News and the deleted the
comment. It was not libellous or defamatory
and I wonder if its management is framing
    comments to fit their biases.
