Scene: Storm Clouds Over the CN Tower


WHERE: The CN Tower, viewed from a balcony at Queen West and St. Patrick streets, looking south.
WHEN: Saturday, July 17, at 3:01 p.m.
WHAT: Signs of a threatening weekend storm—one that’d ultimately pass by Toronto, Severe Thunderstorm Watch be damned. Thunderstorms are predicted again for Sunday night.

    Darn! I happened to just see this and looked at the CN Tower at 3:08 and the view was NOTHING like this :(

    It just looks so dramatic because the photo has been doctored. Not nearly as dramatic without photoshop magic. It’s really not that bad.

    It does look like there’s been some contrast and/or burn tool enhancement.

    Definitely some major burnination. There’s the telltale halos around the CN Tower and the right edge of the cloud, but most tellingly, the saturation increase (blue) from the burn tool.
    That being said, most newsy publications allow some burning and dodging and colour correction, since it’s been done with film and filters forever anyway. There’s a line, however, where too much renders an image misleadingly inaccurate.

    There’s a halo around the CN Tower. It’s a tell-tale sign of the addition of local contrast.
    It is obvious that there is artistic intent in this photo, I’m pointing out that it’s not accurate for use as a journalistic photo.
