And the Pug Goes To…

You looked. You contemplated. You voted. And last night, the results of your efforts were revealed.
This year, the People’s Choice Awards for Architecture go to: 60 Richmond Street East (residential category) and the Royal Conservatory of Music (commercial and institutional category).
Truly excellent buildings, both. 60 Richmond confounds our expectations of what a vertical stack of homes needs to look like (boxy and boring)—it’s fun, it is chock-full of environmentally friendly features, and we fully confess to envying the people who get to live there. The Conservatory, on the other hand, is firmly rooted in Toronto’s architectural history, but contrasts the old brick with sleek new wood and glass to beautiful effect.
In short, we are pleased.
Well, almost. Noticeably absent from Wednesday’s proceedings were the traditional Hall of Shame announcements, which we found gravely disappointing. If we are going to celebrate the best in our architecture, we must likewise condemn the worst. A bit of mockery and derision for the sake of good design, we say!
The full set of winners awaits you in the gallery above.

Was there any explanation as to what happened to the Hall of Shame? I agree that the Hall of Shame was as important to the encouragement of good design in this city as are the awards.

Nobody mentioned it last night, no. This morning the PUGs sent out a press release with the full rankings, so we now know who came in last. (It was the Courtyard Residences and the Shops at Don Mills, btw.) But they really seem to be emphasizing the warm and fuzzy more than in previous years.

I like 60 Richmond, but it’s too bad the external 2nd and 3rd floor balcony planters are filled with dead plants which are visible from the street. How hard would it have been to fill them with some nice perennial boxwood?

I detest the RBC Dexia building. :(
