Duly Quoted: Andy Barrie

“Toronto is like a woman that you married for the money—it’s like a business decision. Whereas Montreal is the woman that all your friends told you was going to eat you alive, but you couldn’t stay away.”
—Andy Barrie, quoted in the Post on the occasion of a joint infidelity-themed tourism campaign by Toronto and Montreal.

Unfortunately the rest of the country doesn’t act like Toronto’s kept man, even though they have no trouble with spending our money.

Andy Barrie’s quote is right – Montreal is married to us for our money and the relationship is killing us. Quebec separation would be the best thing that could happen to Toronto.

Wow. Those two comments above encapsulate in a nutshell why people think Torontonians have a bad attitude to the rest of the country–because some of us do.

Funnily enough, the advert next to this blog entry reads “Date Wealthy Women”

I read it the opposite way entirely: Toronto is cold and dry and and all business. That’s pretty much what the rest of Canada thinks of us (which only goes to show how out of touch they are).

Toronto is wrong about the ROC. The ROC is wrong about Toronto. Willful ignorance on both sides. Let’s have a stupid debate.

My comment was an admittedly weak joke in reference to the original quote. Honestly, I think that Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Montreal, Ottawa, any big city in Canada could rightfully claim to be treated like a wallet by rural Canada. And that’s the way it’s going to remain until we get back to having something close to representation by population in Canada.

What’s there to debate? By and large they hate us, but the numbers are on our side. (I moved here from rural Ontario 11 years ago.)

The best thing that could happen to Toronto is for Quebec to separate from the Dominion of Canada.
We — Toronto — would have so much money we’d be able to finally fix the city. Subways, parks, the water front, roads. They whole shebang.
As it stands today, we ship billions of dollars east down the highway and across the border into New France and French just laugh and laugh and laugh.
Imagine a Sugar Daddy who pays no matter how awfully you behave?
Hopefully this will one day come to a swift end. And the sooner the better.

Yes, and then after Quebec leaves Confederation, what impetus is there for the other provinces to stay? None! They’ll either become states of the Union down south, which will probably end Canada but good. Some victory over Quebec.
