—Kevin Sack, the City’s Director of Strategic Communications, to the National Post, after a press release was sent out this evening saying that Mayor David Miller will be making an “important” announcement on Wednesday morning. You may recall that Miller’s important surprise announcements do tend to be pretty important.

    That would be a miracle if it happened. And I think we would have heard rumours beforehand. But it would be a major announcement, regardless.
    I don’t see why he’d resign early. Again, I think we’d have heard rumours.
    It’s interesting comparing the comments thread here and at the National Post. Here, the first comment is “he’s running again”; there, the first comment is “he’s resigning”. Says it all about the demographics of these two sites, doesn’t it?
    My bet is on a funding announcement, or his re-entry in the mayoralty race. The latter could well be something he’d have a greater ability of keeping secret until tomorrow morning.

    Yeah, its night and day between here and most of the rest of the media. Here Adam Giambrone could do no wrong and Paula Fletcher flipping out on a citizen was actually praised by a few people.

    Anyway, to reiterate, I don’t think he’s going to resign. I’d be surprised if he did. I mean, ask yourself: why?
    Maybe he’s tired and wants to quit early. If this is the case, we wouldn’t necessarily hear rumours beforehand. If this did happen, though, I think it would reflect badly on Miller. Why quit early? No matter what you feel about his policies, such a move would clearly harm the city. You think he’s a lame duck now? How would you describe the interim mayor?
    But maybe he’s resigning to get out early from a big scandal before it explodes. If that’s the case, I think we’d have heard rumours of this scandal beforehand. And whatever you think of Miller’s leadership, no hint of scandal right now is connected to the mayor’s office itself.
    And he’s been getting a little feisty lately, responding to the various candidates’ criticism of his legacy. If he’s made a personal decision to come off the fence and give these candidates someone rather than something to run against, there wouldn’t be as many rumours.
    But I’m basically talking through my hat, here. This post on Torontoist is specifically for baseless speculation on tomorrow’s announcement, and that’s what you’re getting from me. We’ll all find out tomorrow. :-)

    Hmm… I don’t really think it’s either of him resigning or re-entering the race. The former makes no sense whatsoever, while I assume he wouldn’t be using City resources to announce the latter.
    My money is on something to do with Metrolinx/TTC, or something funding/budget-related.

    Beats me why he would resign. Maybe some scandal is coming to light, maybe he has an illness, whatever. It could be a million things.

    I agree with the point made earlier that because this announcement will be made with city resources, it would appear unlikely that Mayor Miller will be using this announcement to declare his candidacy as a 3rd term mayor.
    I think while Rossi and Smitherman have been crafting their election platforms of “no at all costs!” and “no!” respectively, as well as moving to the right of the political spectrum, that Miller certainly would be capable of giving them a run for their money. His overall vision is one that he has run on before, and won with, and it is still very relevant. While we can ramble, rant, and rave about Miller and his political future, at this point, it’s all speculation.
    I think/hope that the announcement will be about a major, sustained, funding initiative involving the province. Since the provincial budget will be announced within the month, perhaps some “uploading” of costs will be made. Has anyone heard of a similar release from Queen’s Park regarding a morning announcement?

    The only reason I don’t fully expect this is because I have a hard time thinking that the province could keep so quiet on this. We’d have heard rumours by now.

    Rumour is he’s getting a job in NYC with the UN. He should have lived in NYC before being Mayor of TO. He would have had seen how a transit system is supposed to expand and how its supposed to run.

    Well it was a hard fought battle Rek. Im putting in 12 hours days at the office and logging in occasionally here helps me get through the long days. That and a bottom cup of Tim’s
