And Then There Were Seventeen

Cheered on by supporters as he filed his papers, Deputy Mayor Joe Pantalone (Ward 19, Trinity-Spadina) officially entered the mayor’s race this morning. Pantalone is positioning himself as the candidate to carry on the work of the Miller administration in a non-flashy, down-to-business manner—as he told the Globe and Mail’s Marcus Gee, “you want someone who will do the job, not someone who is going to entertain you.” So far two hopefuls (Karen Sun and Himy Syed) have submitted their papers to fill Pantalone’s council seat.

So, if my reading is correct, these also rans can run as a mayoral candidate, then realize, say around the middle of BBQ season, that they are true “no chancers”, take all that PR they get (and money raised), THEN jump back into the councillor election?
Damn, I thought we’d finally get rid of at least two twits this way…

Any money raised during the campaign and not used by campaign’s end must be returned to the city. The city
holds the funds for a number of years, just in case
the candidate chooses to return for a second or third
    run at public office.
So, anybody who has a surplus of money at the time of
withdrawing from the campaign must surrender all the remaining money to the city.
In other words, it’s not a quick cash grab by anyone.
I rather got the idea that you were entertaining
    that thought.

David, I’ve heard otherwise from people who ran before. Councillors can make a run for mayor and collect as many donations as possible by law, then quit the race and run for re-election and collect more bucks for their campaign for councillor…and they can keep the signage saying “Pantalone” or “Mamalotti” at every corner. They get twice the money then incumbents running for councillor of that ward.

Yes, more inclined to believe Darren than David here, particularly with this group running the city. Much like every Liberal who ran for the leadership not paying the “loans” back yet…
Lets face it: neither Mammoliti or Joey Pants have a chance, and both will do exactly what I said. And there will be fiscal irregularities up the wazzoo. And they will get away with it.
