The Delta Chelsea, Miles From Accurate!

20091229delta1.jpg
Ah, Yonge and Dundas: bright lights, shopping, entertainment, a scramble intersection, and the towering presence of the Delta Chelsea Downtown Toronto—or at least that’s the impression that Delta wants to convey through an apparently manipulated image that it’s given to numerous travel websites and used in an advertisement in this year’s issue of Harvest Ontario (above). In reality, as the photo after the break demonstrates, the hotel, at 33 Gerrard Street West, does not have such a fortuitous view of Yonge-Dundas Square.

…which is probably a good thing; there are already one too many concrete monstrosities overlooking Yonge and Dundas.

Not manipulated, just shot from a slightly different angle with a MUCH wider lens.

    Steve Munro? Is that you?

It’s a Photoshop. I can tell by the pixels.
…kidding aside, the photo has been hugely manipulated, unless the Atrium on Bay that I’m currently writing this reply from has recently ceased to exist save its east facade.

The pics in the supplied links show just how sloppy of a job they did.
I also seem to remember the Delta Chelsea being tucked further west of Yonge.
plus I’ve seen quite a few ‘shops in my time. ;)

Here’s a link to a clearer version of the image.

Obviously, it’s an old photo and they just relocated. You can see that the Gap still occupies the corner. Don’t you remember when they put the Chelsea on rollers and moved it up the street?

Telescopic lenses cause a foreshortening of the background. Is that what’s happened here?

So, is this is dishonest and lame. Is it breaking any laws?
As a whole, Canada needs higher standards. The government needs to step in and say, “No assholes, you can’t manipulate a photo to give your hotel a better location. That’ll be $5000, please.”

It’s sdvertising people – they want to show that the Delta Chelsea is within conga-line distance of the debauchery of Yonge and Dundas, which it is, so I find it hard to get too exercised that they finessed the photo a little to make the point visually. I mean, have you ever seen a real-world Whopper that looks like the ones on TV?
