Heroes and Villains 2009: Villains Voting, Semi-Final Round

Torontoist is ending the year by naming our Heroes and Villains—the very best and the very worst people, places, and things in and of Toronto over the past twelve months. We’ve unmasked our picks for Heroes and Villains; now, until the end of the year, your votes will whittle our lists down in a single elimination tournament to determine 2009′s Superhero and Supervillain.

One vote really does makes a difference, people—one that was cast two minutes before polls closed at midnight last night, for Toronto a la Cart instead of Joe Pantalone’s Ossington Bylaws, pushed the City’s bumbled street-food program past a city councillor’s contentious regulations against one of our coolest streets. Now, Toronto a la Cart is one of the six Villains remaining in the competition to be Toronto’s Supervillain of 2009. Voting in this, the next-to-last round, lasts until midnight on December 30. (Over on the Heroes side of things, semi-finals voting ends tonight.)

Round Two Results

Bell, Rogers, and Telus (87%) advances over the Yellow Pages (13%); The Summer City Workers’ Strike (77%) over Yonge and Bloor’s Empty Lot (23%); Bed Bugs (66%) over Michael Ignatieff (34%); Gary Bettman and the National Hockey League (56%) over MuchMusic (44%); Prejudging the Michael Bryant–Darcy Allan Sheppard Collision (53%) over Media Layoffs (47%); and Toronto a la Cart (50%)—by a vote!—over Joe Pantalone’s Ossington Bylaws (50%).

I think bed bugs have an unfair advantage, almost like if you put HIV/AIDS on the list.
Something very few people have direct experience with, might know somebody affected second-hand, but all universally agree is bad.

Bed Bugs are bad, but they’re nothing compared to the public’s blatant disregard for ringette.

You could say the same thing about Bell/Rogers/Telus too. In my experience, everyone universally agrees the trio is bad.

Also, there’s no federal regulatory commission that denies other pests the chance to compete for your succulent flesh (on the advice of bed bug lobbyists).

While bed bugs have an unfair advantage, the Toronto a la Cart program is an example of everything that is wrong with this city. Lets take something that is an exciting element of every other cultured city in the world and turn it into a bland, unimaginative, and overpriced version that is destined to fail. All in the name of protecting the public.
And enough with the ringette already.

It was okay to prejudge Igor Kenk on here even without knowing his opinion on ringette.
