Hangin’ Out at St. Peter’s

Today’s Metro contains something of a cock-up. On page 10 of the Toronto edition—distributed in print city-wide and available online, too—there’s a large Canadian Press photo of several ecstatic young people, credited to one Clifford Skarstedt. (That’s the upper half of it, above.) What’s remarkable about this photo? The caption takes us halfway there: “St. Peter’s students…make a splash from their hot tub during the annual Kinsmen Santa Claus Parade in Peterborough, Ont., on Saturday. The parade attracted 87 floats and a variety of marching bands.” Oh, and the male student is…uh, he appears to have his penis out.

UPDATE, DECEMBER 9, 2009: According to the Catholic school board which represents St. Peter’s, the photo depicts a current seventeen-year-old student of the school. While the image as it appeared in Metro does not constitute “child pornography“—those depicted are not “engaged in explicit sexual activity” nor was the image’s “dominant characteristic…the depiction, for a sexual purpose, of a sexual organ”—we’ve nonetheless pixellated the point of contention in the photo above.

    I’m appalled. You apologize to the respective teen’s PARENTS? Teenagers are people too you know. Apologise to THEM. It’s their picture in the paper, it’s this boy’s penis not only posted accidentally in his local newspaper but on the internet for anyone to see. My friend told me about the mishap as she lives in Peterborough. I do not, but if I could find the picture in under 2 minutes, anyone could. What a disgrace to those people in the picture.

    1. Metro has now cropped the picture in the online version of the paper.
    2. This doesn’t look like a mishap, more like a prank. What no one realized is that a photo of that prank would end up in print and on the internet.
    My guess is the result is it’s more a bragging right than an embarrassment.

    actually the two girls are in grade 8 which makes them barely teenagers. and regardless if this was on purpose or not, which it most definetly was not on his part, no news paper has any right to show an indecent picture of a 17 year old boy. i hope the people who get paid to edit these pictures in the first place feel really good about themselves. the poor guy this is going to follow him forever.

    and it was a mistake, not a prank, the “pants” he wore were boxers, so theres a flap, could easily happen to anyone, he had no idea it even happened, he was going around our school saying “hey look guys im in the paper:)” then someone pointed it out to him lmao he freaked but then laughed

    well i know him personally and i can assure you that he is not as pumped about it as you may think. he is very worried about how this may affect his life in the future like his ability to get a job etc. its not fair that everyone thinks it is his fault just because he is making light of it, whats dont is done and feeling sorry for himself isnt going to change what happened.

    as my signin name says (wondering) … first off why are a bunch of teenagers are in a hot tub for a Santa Clause parade. Why would the school allow this type of float to be associated with the schools name? Secondly, to me it is more of a wet t-shirt contest then a hot tub. Sorry maybe I am being strange here but I thought that Santa Clause parades were for Christmas and Kids. Not the best idea for a float in this type of parade… What were the parents of the kids involved thinking letting their children being involved. I know I will probably get lots of comments back about it was done in fun. But come on… Not the right float for this parade. Just my thoughts. And people wonder what the world is coming to…

    we just wanted to be a step up from the other parades. although more clothing should have been worn, it was a good idea to keep things warm seeing how it was freezing out. i thought it was pretty unique

    well if you didnt notice no one is wearing a bikini or even any of the guys are topless, therefore it could have been much more inappropriate, second of all the hot tub idea is unique which is why it was attracting so much attention in the first place. and thirdly what you dont see in the picture is the float and how it was decorated, the people who were walking beside the float handing out candy to the kids and the overall christmas spirit they all had which is more than you can say for the majority of the floats. you are trying to insinuate that teenagers are irresponsible and this is just some kind of joke but people put a lot of work into this and i dont think it is fair they are getting trashed because of some silly mistake that schould have never happened. like wet t-shirt contest? come on give me a break and live a lttle, they reant even showing skin!
